Daniel “Dan” B. Chonde, MD PhD is a researcher and clinical fellow in Neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from MIT with a minor in Theater Arts. Interested in pursuing work with a more direct connection to people, he went on to pursue his doctorate through the Harvard University Program in Biophysics with further training in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics through the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Science & Technology. Through his research in medical imaging he developed a deep interest in patient care and after completing his PhD he went on to receive his MD from Harvard Medical School. He did his intern year of clinical medicine at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital in Brockton, MA and then went on to his radiology residency at MGH.
Dan’s current research interests include exploring how art can be used as a tool to develop empathy and how art, design, and technology can be used to improve inclusivity, and in a broader sense, the patient experience. Working with the Mass General Brigham MESH Incubator he helped develop RadTranslate, a free web tool that provides multilingual instructions to patients. He is the executive director of The Peoples heART, a healthcare-community collaboration aimed at reimagining clinical spaces through art and design to address issues of health equity. He founded Rad Boot Camp, a national collaboration of hospitals and medical student organizations focused on providing education, mentorship, and research opportunities for medical students from historically marginalized groups.
Dan is also the founding diversity, equity, and inclusion chair of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the first and oldest radiology society in the United States.
